LEAD PROGRAM
Protecting Families, Creating Safe Homes

The Passaic County LEAD Program is a transformative initiative dedicated to ensuring safe and healthy homes for families by addressing the dangers of lead exposure. This strategy, supported by a $2 million grant from the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA), focuses on eliminating hazards in residential properties and protecting the well-being of vulnerable populations, especially children.

What does the LEAD Program do?

  1. Lead Remediation and Removal

    • Identifies and eliminates lead hazards in homes, including paint, pipes, and contaminated soil.

    • Ensures that properties meet safety standards to protect residents from lead exposure.

  2. Community Education

    • Informs homeowners, tenants, and property managers about the dangers of lead poisoning and prevention strategies.

  3. Financial Assistance

    • Provides financial support to eligible families and property owners for lead remediation projects.

  4. Promotion of Healthy Housing

    • Partners with community organizations to raise awareness and address concerns related to housing safety.

Why is the LEAD Program important?

  • Protecting Children’s Health: Lead exposure, especially in children, can cause developmental delays, learning difficulties, and lifelong health problems.

  • Revitalizing the Housing Stock: Lead removal makes homes safer and increases property values across Passaic County.

  • Creating Long-Term Solutions: By addressing lead hazards now, the program helps break the cycle of economic and health challenges caused by unsafe housing.

Impact at a Glance

  • Hundreds of homes targeted: The program focuses on properties built before 1978, where lead paint and pipes are common.

  • Community outreach: Empowers families with knowledge and resources to protect themselves and their loved ones.
